Etiqa Takaful on track to achieve RM1.4b premium

Published on: Saturday, February 28, 2009
Kuala Lumpur: Etiqa Takaful Bhd is on track to achieve RM1.4 billion premium target for financial year ending June 30 as the life segment is showing continuous growth, Chief Executive Officer Mohd Tarmidzi Ahmad Nordin said Friday.

For the financial year ended June 30 last year, the company recorded a premium of RM1.044 billion, he said.

"We are the takaful company in Malaysia to cross the one billion mark. In fact, we are the biggest takaful company in the world. We are quite positive to realise the target," he told reporters after handing RM70,000 from Etiqa Takaful to the Fisabilillah Trust Fund.

Mohd Tarmidzi said the life segment contributes about 70 percent to the company's growth while 30 percent by non-life segment.

Currently, the company has about a million policy holders.

On the RM70,000 contribution, the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF) chief academic officer and dean Prof Datuk Dr Syed Othman Alhabshi said the fund is to assist deserving students to pursue INCEIF's flagship company programme-Chartered Islamic Finance Professional (CIFP) - masters and doctorate programmes.

The fund, established by INCEIF in 2007, is the zakat (tithe) payables received from organisations and individuals that will be kept under the custody of an external trust body.

He said funds would be disbursed only with the instruction of the management trustee comprising five members, with two from INCEIF and three external parties.

As of today, 101 students from 21 countries have benefited from the fund to pursue their studies under the CIFP programme.

Ten students from six countries have been awarded financial aid for PhD programme and three students from three countries for the masters programme.

Etiqa Eyes RM5 Bln In Premiums

KUANTAN, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- Malayan Banking Bhd's insurance and takaful arm, Etiqa Insurance Bhd, aims to rake in RM5 billion in premiums for financial year ending June 30, 2009 despite the uncertain global economic environment.
Its chief sales officer, Shahril Azuar Jimin, said the insurance industry was currently facing a slowdown due to financial crisis in the US and Europe.

"We are aware that the insurance business has been afected. But for us, its is business as usual," he said at the company's Hari Raya open house here.

He said currently, Etiqa, the second largest takaful insurance in Malaysia, has over two million customers with 16,000 agents throughout the country.

Shahril said Etiqa hoped to tap into the Malay market.

"We know that many Malaysians do not have insurance policies even though they are well-off, especially the Malays," he said.

He said only seven percent of the Malays were insured.

Etiqa to focus on raising awareness

By EUGENE MAHALINGAM
KUALA LUMPUR: Etiqa Takaful Bhd, the takaful arm of Mayban Fortis Holdings Bhd, wants to increase awareness on the importance of takaful life insurance in the country.

To do this, it would focus on training its agency staff, said chief executive officer Mohd Tarmidzi Ahmad Nordin.

“We want to increase the productivity of our staff and train them to inform people that we are not offering a product but a solution to their problems.

“At the end of the day, we need to remind people on the importance of takaful. With good agents, we can do this,” he told StarBiz recently.

He said the penetration rate for takaful life insurance in Malaysia was still very low as many people were unaware of its importance.

Mohd Tarmidzi

“The takaful segment currently comprises about 7% of the overall insurance industry. With better awareness, we can grow the segment.

“We would like the segment to be at the same level where conventional insurance is today,” Tarmidzi said, adding that the penetration rate for conventional insurance in Malaysia was 40% currently.

“A lot of people do not consider takaful important because it is something intangible,” he said, adding that people often took death for granted.

“Nobody wants to think about death. Until it happens to someone close to them, people always think that death is something that happens to other people.”

Tarmidzi noted that hiking fuel prices and inflationary fears would result in people being more cautious with their spending and less likely to consider an insurance policy.

“People should be more mindful about their spending habits. Everything is becoming expensive but income levels remain the same. A takaful policy is not expensive.”

He added that people who already had takaful should not cancel their policies if they felt maintaining the policy was becoming a financial burden.

Mayban Fortis is 70% owned by Malayan Banking Bhd and 30% owned by Fortis Insurance International NV, a leading European integrated financial services company.

According to Tarmidzi, Mayban Fortis has about 14,000 agents, 10,000 of whom were takaful agents.
