Etiqa Eyes RM5 Bln In Premiums

KUANTAN, Oct 15 (Bernama) -- Malayan Banking Bhd's insurance and takaful arm, Etiqa Insurance Bhd, aims to rake in RM5 billion in premiums for financial year ending June 30, 2009 despite the uncertain global economic environment.
Its chief sales officer, Shahril Azuar Jimin, said the insurance industry was currently facing a slowdown due to financial crisis in the US and Europe.

"We are aware that the insurance business has been afected. But for us, its is business as usual," he said at the company's Hari Raya open house here.

He said currently, Etiqa, the second largest takaful insurance in Malaysia, has over two million customers with 16,000 agents throughout the country.

Shahril said Etiqa hoped to tap into the Malay market.

"We know that many Malaysians do not have insurance policies even though they are well-off, especially the Malays," he said.

He said only seven percent of the Malays were insured.
